Changes to Federal Title IX Regulations

On May 6, 2020 the Department of Education’s Office for Civil Rights issued new regulations mandating how UO and all colleges and universities must investigate and adjudicate sexual misconduct cases under Title IX, the federal statute that prohibits discrimination on the basis of sex or gender in any federally funded education program or activity.

The UO is carefully reviewing the new regulations and determining how to implement the new requirements in a way that best preserves its current system’s fairness, thoroughness, and sensitivity to the needs and rights of all parties. As part of this process, UO will engage and seek input from the university community through the Standard Operating Procedures advisory group, which performs an annual review of the Title IX adjudication procedures.

UO’s revised student sexual misconduct procedures will become effective on August 14, 2020. Persons wishing to provide nonconfidential input are invited to contact the Office of the Dean of Students at dos@uoregon.edu or the Title IX Coordinator at titleixcoordinator@uoregon.edu.

Committed to Inclusion

"The university’s leadership team stands united in our resolve to do whatever we can to enable every member of our community to flourish and contribute. I also want to make absolutely clear that we condemn any threat or effort to intimidate anyone at the university. We are a community of scholars. Efforts to divide us based upon the color of our skin, our nationality, our immigration status, our abilities, our diversity of thought, our gender, or our sexual orientation must be called out and stopped."

—University of Oregon President Michael Schill

Title IX is a federal statute that prohibits discrimination on the basis of sex, which has been interpreted to include gender discrimination, sexual harassment, and sexual violence. Under Title IX, all members of the University of Oregon community—students, faculty, staff, applicants for admission, and applicants for employment—are protected from gender discrimination, sexual harassment, and sexual violence.
